The Hillman House

the oldest Residence in Camden County, NJ. Est. 1697

310 years of amazing history...
This fabulous 3 story federal style colonial home was built in 1697. It was founded by 17th century Quakers and is steeped in such rich lavish history... Constucted from 2 ft thick quarry stone... If these walls could talk...They would echo words from its many visitors such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and William Penn to name just a few. It is the home of many of the 1st Quaker meetings in this area.

In 1778 during the Hessian and Revolutionary War period. The Hillman house was robbed by the British.Mary Hillman, the widow of James Hillman was robbed of everything.  The large stone structure was an obvious target...By the time the British soldiers had finished plundering. Mary Hillman was enraged... In frustration she picked up  a  teakettle that escaped the notice of the soldiers and hurled it at them as if to exclaim... "You forgot something" She angrily told them to take the kettle since they have taken everything else...

As if that wasn't enough...It was also a very active area for the "Underground Railroad" during America's Cival War period.
There are holes under the second floor stairs where the locals have told stories of "breath holes" being drilled under the stairs on the second floor stairs to hide people.

This home is a wonderful place filled with  possitive, warm and cozy energy...
